Minimum Wage Woes
Dear Editor,

I’ve been a student here since 2004. I recently read an article pertaining to the University Health Center. First and foremost, made up stories do not have any validity or reliability. Second of all, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know the two nurses, medical assistant, nurse practitioners, and two doctors that work for the students. I’ve been to the health center probably once a year for the past four years. They have always been very attentive to my needs. Once I was sick with a very bad sore throat and came in with no appointment and was seen within the hour as a walk-in. If it’s ever been something the nurses couldn’t treat, with time allowing, they’ve had the doctor see me.

I would like to make it clear, yes, you do pay $20 of your tuition to receive health services. It is protocol that if someone were to walk in with stomach pain, and/or symptoms of appendicitis to immediately send them to the E.R. This is universal knowledge in any medical setting. Also, in response to the previous complaint about the health center, there is no treatment for Mono except for rest (it’s a virus)-look it up.

Now, there are 8700 students and I know by talking with the dedicated team of medical professionals at the Health Center that they see about 35 patients a day.

I myself have also witnessed walk-ins being admitted depending on the severity of their symptoms. Also, I’m not sure how many students realize what a real wait in a doctor’s office is. I’ve had a child and any time I had my scheduled appointment I waited two hours before even being put in a room!

An even more important point: the person who wrote this letter spends 70% of the letter talking about something that never happened! However, many will read this and believe this story, simply ignoring the “horrible ending to this girl’s story if in fact it was true. But it’s not. Yet the scary thing is it could have been.” In this person’s own letter, they state that this is a made up story! Had I not been treated so well by the professionals at the Health Center, I wouldn’t have taken this article seriously.
So as a student and their patient, I would just like to say that the
people at the health center work very hard and don’t deserve for
people to misjudge them or underestimate how much they truly care about each and every student.

Thank you
