Breaking Down The Door Award

This award goes to a person who has broken down barriers for women, whose work continues to rock the status quo so as to enable more women to rise to higher achievements.

2005 Margaret Lucero: Margaret is recieving this year's award because of her high caliber work on the Department of Justice Grant. Margaret worked to make sure everyone's voices were included in the process, and synthesized the various ideas into a cohesive plan. Her nominator said: "She was a driving force who saw a need and let no one stand in the way of requesting funds for much needed programs/services."

2004 Claudia Johnston: Claudia is recognized because of her accomplishments as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. "She has opened outlets for other women to enter Administration. She is committed to reshaping the image and direction of the Women's Center by promoting the benefits of long-range planning that is consistent with the University's mission statement. She has been integral in gaining a voice for the Women's Center in venues such as the Provost's Council, the NCAA self-study committee, and on various job searches throughout the University."

2003 Karen Middleton: Karen is recognized for her time and effort in opening doors for women at the Women's Shelter in Corpus Christi. 2003 Linda Cook: Linda "continuously challenges the public's awareness about barriers to the achievement of life goals for women. She fosters discussions with students and colleagues about stereotypes that limit women's access to jobs, pay equity, and personal self-image. Her approach to sensitive issues allows for safe reflection on personal beliefs about a gender issue yet prevents escape from the issue at hand. Linda's actions keep gender issues in the workplace visible. She generates opportunities for students to meet role models that can inspire women in leadership roles."

2002 Sarah Heath: Sarah is recognized for her creativity in planning Women's History Month events. "Her outstanding support of the Women's Center and ALL of its events is incomparable. She gives 200% out of 100% to the Women's Center and is without question a valuable person to have associated with the Women's Center." This is also the year that Sarah worked tirelessly to bring Sheryl Swoopes to Corpus Christi. She provided many of the Coastal Bend's young women "with access to an honorable role model - Swoopes."

2001 Holly Patterson-McNeill: Holly is recognized for her devotion and her leadership of the Board of Directors for the Women's Center. Holly served as Chair of the Board from 2000-2001. She works "tirelessly to the benefit of all women."
