Change The World Award
This award goes to an undergraduate student
who is active in campus organizations and who demonstrates a commitment
to gender equality, consistent with the mission and spirit of the
Women's Center.
2005 Zena Marie Franklin: Zena founded the student group
Project: Equality three years ago as a way to promote feminist causes
on campus. She's done great work the last few years - planning a march
for Domestic Violence Awareness, supporting various Women's Center
programs, and educating students about feminist causes. She's done the
bulk of the work of this student organization on her own. Zena has been
our Special Events planning intern this semester. She planned and
implemented two major programs this semester - the Women Who Dared
Fashion Show, and the Vagina Monologues. Her nominator said: "It has
been a dream of mine to have a special event planning intern actually
take on an event and run with it. Zena did that and more. One of Zena's
goals for her time here at TAMU-CC was to bring the Vagina Monologues
to campus. Her work on the Vagina Monologues was incredible, even in
the face of tremendous adversity. Zena began planning this even three
years ago, and hit insurmountable road blocks every year. This semester
is her last semester here, and she decided that she was doing Vagina
Monologues no matter what. And she did. She built the support network,
found co-sponsors, farmed out the expenses and work among the different
organizations, kep track of everything that needed to be done,
collaborated with every single Wonen's Center staff member on a
different aspect of the project, worked with Scheduling to line out all
our technical issues, on top of casting and directing the show. She
dealt with the complaints about the production very courteously and
professionally, and managed to use this as a "teachable moment" for
some. I was extremely impressed with her work on this project. For
these reasons and many more, Zena is our "Change the World" Student for
this year. She has already been working to "Change the World," and I
don't see her stopping anytime soon."
2004 Liza Mucheru-Wisner: Liza is the student director of
the newly formed Islander Cultural Alliance, and is involved in just
about every activity offered on campus - on top of being a fabulously
talented Middle Eastern Dance Club member. "Liza has helped and been
involved with Women's Center programs for the last 2 years. She always
promotes the Women's Center in a very positive way. She strives for
equality across the board, in all areas of her life. She is very
involved on campus, mainly in organizations that promote diversity and
equality. She has always demonstrated what the Women's Center stand for
and believes in - without event trying."
2004 Jeff Fischer: "He is a great leader; I always see him
on the go, and he strives for excellence and has always been supportive
of the Women's Center." Jeff is recognized for his contributions to the
Women's Center during Board meetings, and at our Annual Garage Sale.
"Jeff does and says what needs to be done to accomplish our mission of
equality."
2003 Linda Sousse: Linda "is a natural leader" and is
recognized for eagerness, drive, and passion for women's issues. "Linda
is a great role model for our students because she is intelligent and
she stands up for what she values."
2003 Tina Calzada: Tina is always eager to help with any
Women's Center activity. She brings humor and energy to every function.
Tina is "a great source of strength" for the Center.
2002 Tracy Johnson: Tracy has a presence on campus that is
undoubtedly felt. She always has a smile on her face and a "hello" for
everyone. Tracy served as a student Model for the Get the Job event in
2002, and has since served on he planning committee - and has never
complained.
2002 Maxie Beyer: Maxie is "no-nonsense, but manages to
represent the Women's Center in a friendly and professional way. Even
when she is not on duty, she represents the Women's Center well. She is
also a model diplomat for us, getting her husband and brother to aid us
in some of the projects we have done!"
2001 Ceil Venable: Ceil worked long hours "organizing and
encouraging" women to step forward out of the shadows, join together,
and to be counted. "Her work regarding women in the oil field again
exemplifies her ability to cross gender lines, promote women's efforts
and accomplishments." She has provided "tremendous leadership" with the
Nontraditional Student Group.
2001 Summer Stanaland: Summer worked as both the student
worker and the PR intern for the Women's Center. She handled both jobs
"expertly." Summer "is deeply committed to women's issues, serves on
the WC Board of Directors, and has been a tremendous asset to the work
of the Women's Center." She also assisted in the design and proof of
the childcare survey along with "valuable input" as to the design of a
childcare facility for the campus.
2000 Rhonda Wilson Williamson: Rhonda was the public
relations intern for the Women's Center in 2000 and did an outstanding
job on all the publicity and programming for Women's History Month.
Rhonda "is a student we believe will really continue to change the
world for the betterment of all women."
