Islander Women in Leadership

The goal of the IWIL program is to to foster a supportive environment in which to explore the challenges women leaders encounter and to teach knowledge, skills and wisdom that participants will find helpful in reaching their full potential.

Faculty will be paired with a student in her discipline. The student will be asked to develop a list of challenges in her life she would like the mentor to help her work through. The program will initially consist of the paired mentors/mentees attending monthly forums that would encourage discussion on a range of topics. At the end of the year, mentees are asked to reflect on their progress towards overcoming or coping with their life challenges.

Program goal and workshop topics have been adopted from Duke University's WILD program (Women In Leadership Development). Texas A&M University has a similar program called AWIL (Aggie Women in Leadership) that is housed in the Women's Studies department and has an academic course requirement and allows students to graduate with a "Women's Leadership" seal on their diploma.
