Breast Cancer Awareness Month October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer deaths among American women, and both men and women should be aware that age, obesity, genetics, and family history are factors that can contribute to the risk of developing this disease. Individuals may help reduce their personal risk of breast cancer through regular exercise and healthy lifestyle choices. Also, regular self-exams, clinical breast exams, and mammograms are vital since treatments are most effective when breast cancer is detected early. Paint The Island Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins in a
rather colorful way here at the Island University. For the first few
days in October, Women Center staff and countless volunteers help
distribute and cover the island with pink ribbons. We also have
information tables to distribute flyers and awareness ribbons to
students, faculty, and staff. Our main program is an expo called "Paint
the Island Pink". "Paint the Island Pink" is sponsored annually by the
Women’s Center for Education and Service to educate students and the
public about the importance of regular breast self examinations and
early detection. Breast cancer survivors will share their stories and
Doctors will be on hand to answer questions from the audience
concerning the disease.
Local cancer organizations will also be on hand with display materials
showcasing the treatment, care and support options available for breast
cancer patients in the Coastal Bend. For more information about
reserving a table, please call our office at (361) 825-2792. Paws For A Cause The Women's Center and Recreational Sports
team up to host "Paws for a Cause" - a fundraising dog walk that first
began in October of 2006. There is a $5 entry fee and all proceeds of
the walk will benefit "First Friday", a local group that underwrites
free mammograms for South Texans in need. Students, faculty, and
community memember are welcome to attend. Student organizations on
campus are encouraged to help volunteer. |
