Internship Opportunities
Qualifications: Majoring in
Communication, Theatre, English, minoring in Women and Gender Studies,
or other relevant major; Intern must be in good academic standing with
the University.
Dates of Internship: Fall & Spring Semesters
Number of Hours Worked Each Week: 20
Pay: $6.55/hr starting
Semester & Number of Credit Hours: Fall and Spring
Semesters annually - 3 hour credit
Each intern is responsible for at least 120 hours (for 3 credits). The
intern will perform duties that will enhance their educational
experience and help prepare them for a job in the profession. The
time spent on tasks that do not contribute to the intern's learning
experience will be kept to a minimum.
The intern's work is a vital contribution to the work of the Women's
Center. The intern will be treated with respect befitting a member of
the Center's professional staff. As such, the quality of work submitted
is to be of a professional caliber. Interns will obey the rules laid
out in the Women's Center's staff handbook. All interns report to the
Women's Center Director.
Below is a general description of each internship that is offered at
the Women's Center. If you have any questions relating to any of the
internships please do not hesitate to contact us.
Special Event Planning Intern
The supervisor and intern agree that the
intern will perform the following functions:
- Must be familiar with MS Word and PowerPoint; Web design and updating
skills preferred.
- Write and format a Fall and Spring newsletter for the Women's Center
detailing it's upcoming activites and events.
- Write and update content for the Women's Center's webpage.
- Write press releases for each Women's Center event.
- Assist the Director with planning Women's Center events.
- Coordinate a calendar of events and summaries of activities to be
published on the Women's Center's website.
- Aid the Center's Director in lining up speakers for events.
- Setting up, attending, and tearing down events.
- Compiling the Center's event evaluation forms.
- Publicity, communication, and committee work related to special
events planning.
- Contribute to the Women's Center team.
- Other duties as assigned.
These are the goals that should be accomplished by the intern:
- Intern will gain a broad understanding of the skills required to plan
and implement a special event.
- Intern will gain a broad understanding of the publicity involved in
recruiting an audience for a special event.
- Intern will learn to function as an effective team and staff member.
Promotions & Publicity Intern
The supervisor and intern agree that the
intern will perform the following functions:
- Assess the programs and activities of the Center and develop a
marketing plan to promote the Center and its activities for the
semester.
- Coordinate with the Administrative Assistant to write webpage content
to
publicize the center.
- Cooperate with Public Affairs to effectively promote the Women's
Center's events and services to internal and external communities.
- Develop marketing materials for the Women's Center including, but not
limited to:
- A tri-fold display to be used at
orientations
- Flyers about services and programs
- Assist the Director in updating existing marketing materials
- Promote the Center at Orientations held throughout the semester
- Contribute to the Women's Center team.

These are the goals that should be accomplished by the intern:
- Intern will gain a broad understanding of the skills required to
market a service.
- Intern will gain a broad understanding of the publicity involved in
recruiting an audience for a special event.
- Intern will learn the importance of developing and executing a
consistent message.
- Intern will learn to function as an effective team and staff member.
IWIL Leadership Intern - year long internship
The supervisor and intern agree that the
intern will perform the following functions:
- Assist the Director & Administrative Assistant with planning the
annual Islander Women in Leadership (IWIL) program.
- Recruit faculty & staff mentors and student mentees for the
program.
- Aid the Center's Director in lining up speakers for workshops.
- Creating icebreakers and agendas for monthly workshops.
- Planning annual “get to know you” mixer for participants.
- Setting up, attending, and tearing down IWIL events.
- Designing and distributing publicity and various forms of
communication to promote the program.
- Communicating frequently with mentors and mentees to foster a sense
of community.
- Formulating and compiling an end of year evaluation of the program.
- Contribute to the Women's Center team.
- Other duties as assigned.
These are the goals that should be accomplished by the intern:
- Intern will gain a broad understanding of the skills required to plan
and implement an educational series.
- Intern will gain a broad understanding of the publicity involved in
recruiting an audience and maintaining consistent communication with a
group.
- Intern will learn to function as an effective team and staff member.
- Intern will learn and utilize effective leadership skills.
Vagina Monologues Director
The supervisor and intern agree that the
intern will perform the following functions:
- Direct the production of The Vagina Monologues to be performed in
February of each year.
- Complying with all V-Day College Campaign Rules.
- Casting the production.
- Cooperating with Performing Arts Center employees to insure a
successful performance.
- Assembling a technical and house crew.
- Work with the Women's Center's staff to implement the marketing
campaign for the production.
- Keep accurate and detailed records of the event.
- Contribute to the Women's Center team.
- Other duties as assigned or negotiated between the intern and
supervisor.
These are the goals that the supervisor and intern have determined
should be accomplished by the intern:
- Intern will have executed a theatre production, providing them with
vital experience and skills for a career in the theatre.
- Intern will gain a broad understanding of how communication skills
are used daily in the workplace.
- Intern will learn to function as an effective team and staff member.
Student Assistant – MUST be workstudy
The supervisor and student assistant agree
that the
student assistant will perform the following functions:
- Assist Administrative Assistant by covering her phone and desk
- Run errands for department
- Deliver department publicity materials
- Maintain a cordial office environment for visitors and staff
- Work with the interns and Director on various event planning and
implementation projects
- Assist the Director, secretary, and interns with special projects
- Maintain the Center’s library & bulletin board.
- Other duties as assigned
