Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month
(SAAM), April brings an annual opportunity to focus awareness on sexual
violence and its prevention. It is also an opportunity to highlight the
efforts of individuals and agencies that provide rape crisis
intervention and prevention services while offering support to sexual
assault survivors, victims and their families. SAAM raises awareness of
sexual violence and its prevention through special events while
highlighting sexual violence as a major public health issue and
reinforces the need for prevention efforts.
Don't Skirt The Issue
Clothing With A Purpose - Skirts are handmade
from donated pillowcases
and bedsheets and are sold as a fundraising opportunity. Proceeds
benefit various programs and organizations that help stop violence
against women.
We collected gently used pillowcases and bedsheets throughout the month
of September back in 2006. Our finished skirts will then be on sale
during various parts of the year (mainly in October and April) in the
University Center for only $10. We also have t-shirts for sale as well
(also $10). All proceeds will benefit the Women's Shelter of South
Texas.
We are also encouraging everyone to wear their purchased skirts to
bring attention to the silence surrounding sexual assault. We also
encourage you to tell everyone about your skirt.
College Statistics
- One in four women in college today has been
victims of rape, and
almost 90% of them knew their assailants.
- Of these women, only 27% identified themselves as rape victims.
- One in twelve college-age men admit having fulfilled the prevailing
definition of rape or attempted rape, yet virtually none of these men
identify themselves as rapists.
- From a sample of sorority women, 24% had experienced an attempted
rape, 17% were victims of a completed rape. Almost half of these rapes
and attempted rapes were perpetrated in a fraternity house.
- College students are most vulnerable to rape during the first few
weeks of the freshman and sophomore years.
- 34% of completed rapes and 45% if attempted rapes take place on
campus. Almost 60% of the completed campus rapes that take place on
campus occur in the victim's residence, 31% occur in another residence,
and 10% occur in a fraternity.
