Advanced Placement Teacher’s Summer Institute

Course Descriptions :

AP Biology
Consultant: Mark Adame

AP Calculus AB
Consultant: Dixie Ross
Designed to meet the needs of the beginning AP Calculus teacher, this course will focus on the content and teaching methodology appropriate to an AP course as well as the AP exam format and grading standards.

What participants should bring:
● Graphing calculator
● Textbook used in class

AP Computer Science A/AB
Consultant: Leon Schram
Join Leon Schram as he presents the AP Computer Science "A" and "AB" Summer Institutes. Learn a method to help teachers teach all AP Computer Science "A" topics by creating a two-year curriculum. Enhance the quality and enrollment of the AP Computer Science course by adding a PreAP Computer Science course that will include classroom tested materials. Marketing strategies for ernrolling students into AP Computer Science courses will also be emphasized. Explore the new GridWorld Case Study after teaching it for one year, including sharing "best practices" in this area. Participants will examine proven strategies to prepare students for the APCS Examination. Leon Schram will also share information on a new electronic testing approach that has been developed for the last three years. Specific topics for both "A" and "AB" course will be presented.

  • Computer Science Department Chair at John Paul II High School in Plano, Texas
  • 30 years in education, 25 years as an AP teacher
  • Member of the Texas Computer Education Association
  • Selected as a member of the AP Computer Science Test Development Committee
  • Authored Student Friend Pascal, Exposure C++, Exposure Java and Preparation for the AP Computer Science Examination (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th editions)
  • Received the Ross Peror Excellence in Teaching Award, Richardson ISD Teacher of the Year, Texas Excellence Award for Outstanding Teachers, Texas Computer Educator of the Year and College Board Advanced Placcment Special Recognition Award.

 

AP English Literature and Composition
Consultant: Lori Brown

The Advanced Placement Summer Institute in English Literature will focus on strategies, projects, and activities to help both the beginner teacher and the veteran teacher better prepare students for the English Literature and Composition Advanced Placement course. The course will be hands on and interactive.

Consultant Information:

After living in Okinawa, Japan, for 18 months, Lori Brown began her teaching career in Oklahoma on Absentee Shawnee land. At the end of her third year, she began teaching for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools in England where she lived, worked, and traveled extensively for 9 years. lori was instrumental in developing a showcase school-within-a-school program while at Woodbridge American High School. The pas 15 years have been spent at Winston Churchill high School in San Antonio, Texas. She has written curriculum for the district numerous times and has been a presenter for district in-services.

Lori has had the privlege of visiting many foreign countries, but the highlight trip was to Berlin the day the wall fell. She also treasures her trip to Russia in the early 1990s.

Lori has a wonderful husband (also a teacher), a beautiful daughter who will graduate in December with her teaching certificate in elementary education , and two delightful Bichon Frise dogs named Hamlet and Ophelia.
