Kayaking for Adults with Disabilities
Outreach partnered with Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital and Camp Aranzazu (Rockport) on September 11-12 to offer an adaptive kayaking program to people with disabilities. The participants received instruction from Jim Needham on Saturday on kayaking fundamentals, including in-pool instruction and practice "wet exit" maneuvers. Following mastering the basics, participants paddled through the waters of Copano Bay, with an extended tour of the coastal marshes. All participants had a great time and mastered the skills, two TV stations featured the outing, and the partners plan to offer this experience again next year for disabled adults. Call Jim at 2708 to discuss the possibilities!

Successful Clean Air Fair
The Pollution Prevention Partnership held a successful Clean Air Fair on August 28 at the new Circle K at IH 37 and Water Street. Fun activities to highlight clean air included a brief hot air balloon demonstration, frisbee golf, kite flying, and a $5,000 basketball toss competition. Over 200 motorists drove past AutoCheck for emissions monitoring, and 20 vehicles were identified with significant enough problems to warrant a FREE repair. About 50 people availed themselves of FREE test drives of clean air hybrid (electric and gas motor) vehicles. Gretchen Arnold organized this whole thing and can be reached at 3070. See some
pictures.

Summer Camps Coming to a Close

Many Coastal Bend youth caught a glimpse of college life and our campus in particular this summer. About 25 programs were made available and served approximately 1,500 youth in academic, athletic, and personal growth kinds of experiences. Participants caught the vision of "going to college" someday through these camps and institutes. All of the campus staff and faculty are appreciated for your cooperation and patience! Without your support, many of these youngsters would not have the opportunity to leave their homes and broaden their horizons. Thanks so much!

AutoCheck Checks out TxDOT
Alex McNair held a successful collaborative event with the Texas Department of Transportation on July 13. Alex and AutoCheck were able to screen hundreds of cars belonging to the general public and also to TxDOT personnel. They found 6 high-polluting cars, the largest number in one single day in the history of the AutoCheck program. All 6 owners agreed to treat their cars to repair work on July 21 at a local garage, courtesy of the AutoCheck grant. KIII TV joined the fun and featured the event in their evening newscast. Everyone who stopped by learned more about their cars and how they can "drive clean" and maintain our local air quality. To learn more about AutoCheck or to receive e-mails about the next AutoCheck dates and locations, call Alex at 2197.

Family Life Center Enjoys a GREAT Summer
Who knew that within three weeks of planned activities the selected 15 students would have the opportunity to learn so much about themselves and each other. Components that the Family Life Center focused on were family bonding, career, cultural, personal, academic and recreation. Each student brought their own unique experience to the different activities of the summer program. Everyday the students began with physical exercise followed by lessons which at times involved speakers on topics such as drug and alcohol awareness, nutrition, and mental health. In addition the Haas Middle School students went on exciting field trips to places like the Texas Parks and Wildlife Fish Hatchery, the Texas State Aquarium, Fun Trackers, the Corpus Christi Science and History Museum, Oso Swimming pool, and the Century 16 Movie Theater. Three very interactive activities that the students enjoyed during the summer program were researching and presenting a power point presentation on a different culture, designing and making their own T-shirts, and making creative picture frames. For more information on the Family Life Center, call Sylvia Lopez at 994-6992.

AutoCheck Goes to the Newspaper
Alex McNair took AutoCheck to the Caller-Times on June 3 for a successful event. This state-of-the-art engine analyzer was set up directly in front of the Caller-Times on Mesquite Street and measured the air emissions of over 1,400 cars and trucks. The Caller-Times staff had fun driving their own cars by the system and reading the large and colorful messages telling them whether their cars were emitting too many pollutants or not. To learn more about the AutoCheck system or to be placed on the e-mail list of those notified about the dates and locations of AutoCheck's appearances, call Alex at 2197.
