Don't Miss Clean Air Fair - August 28th
Let AutoCheck measure your vehicle's emission levels at the Clean Air Fair on Sunday, August 28 from 4-7 p.m. at the Whataburger Field VIP Parking/Street area. Free mechanical service will be arranged for failing, polluting vehicles to get them running clean. While you're there see the UT Solar Race Car, listen to the Battle of the Garage Bands, and enjoy snacks, beverages and lots of fun for the whole family. It is free and open to the public. A&M-CC Students Work To Help Foster Youth Find Homes
This summer, A&M-CC alumna Nitza Joseph teamed up with photography student Jessica Doege and technical writing students Elias Osegueda, Mary Ramon, Rudy Villarreal, and Holly West to help the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services launch the Heart Gallery of South Texas, a photo gallery of children looking for permanent, adoptive homes. Jessica and Nitza will continue working on the project this fall along with additional students from Dr. Catherine Quick's technical writing course. Business Leadership Class Works To Make A Difference
Each fall, management professor Dr. Karen Middleton gives the students her Leadership and Managerial Effectiveness class the opportunity to apply what they are learning to real community needs. This fall, the class will work with Housing & Community Services to renovate the educational center at North Side Manor apartments to provide the children a safe place to study and play after school. G-Force Students Awarded Scholarships
Thanks to the Collegiate G-Force Grant, five collegiate G-Force students were awarded $1,000 scholarships in recognition of their hard work helping area high students navigate the hurdles to higher education. G-Force members work in GO Centers at area high schools assisting students find financial aid, complete admissions forms and take the necessary steps to enter college. The scholarship recipients are: Jason Caffey, Kayla Devora, Mayra Esquivel, JoAnn Mena and Mary Semler. Congratulate them for a job well done! Go Center Students Awarded Scholarships
Four "Helping Coastal Bend Students Achieve" scholarships were awarded to local high school students for serving as peer mentors at GO Centers, and assisting other high school students with college admissions and financial aid applications. The $500 scholarships were funded through Title V and can be used to attend the higher education institution of their choice. The students honored were Alyssa Lopez (Flour Bluff), Monica Sanchez (Miller High School), and Shelby Gonzales, Maria Garcia(both of Robstown High School). Kayak & Surf Camps Held For Area Youth
Outreach held a Summer Kayak Camp for children and moms from the Women's Shelter Outreach that included kayaking, fishing, outdoor education, and a trip to the Aquarium. Outreach members also assisted with a Surfrider Surf Camp for children with mental and physical disabilities. A kayaking program for blind children is scheduled for the end of July. Surfrider will also be providing a surf camp for these children. TAMU-CC Surfrider members include Jim Needham, Gary Jeffress, Philippe Tissot, and John Adams. Advanced Placement Teachers Enjoy Island Living and Learning
The 2005 Advanced Placement Teachers Summer Institute (APTSI) hosted over 200 local and area middle and high school advanced placement teachers. The APTSI is designed to provide new Advanced Placement teachers with the skills and resources to use in the classroom. The 33 hour, week long course was a huge success and we look forward to the 2006 APTSI. Special thanks to Dr. Diana Cardenas, Dr. Chuck Etheridge, Dr. Elisabeth Mermann, Dr. George Tintera, and Tom Krenek, who generously volunteered as guest speakers for Advanced Placement English, Mathematics, and History sessions. Consultants and participants alike found their presentations insightful and useful in the classroom. New 4-Day Ozone Forecast Introduced
The Air Quality Program with the Pollution Prevention Partnership coordinated a meteorologist and industry partner briefing of the utilization of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality 4 day ozone forecast which predicts high ozone days four days in advance - a great tool to plan emission reduction activities. Campus will also be taking advantage of this new forecast. When high ozone days are predicted, a notification will be provided in "campus announcements" to better plan your activities for the next few days. Petroleum Technology Transfer Council Reviews Best Practices
Josh McDowell, program coordinator for the Pollution Prevention Partnership, presented strategies for reducing upstream production emissions at the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council's Best Managed Practices Workshop on June 16.
