Research Interests

American Philosophy and Pragmatism, especially the work of George Santayana and Charles S. Peirce.

Some Links & Explanation

Philosophy

  • While I was an undergraduate student at the University of Manitoba (http://www.umanitoba.ca/) I became very interested in the philosophy of Santayana. For quite a while Santayana was virtually my only philosophical interest. Most people know Santayana through the quote "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." He is a quotable philosopher. But there is much more to him than that. Have a look.

  • In 1996 I entered the doctoral program at the Univeristy of Toronto (http://philosophy.utoronto.ca/site/news/). I worked with Cheryl Misak, along with Angus Kerr-Lawson of the Univeristy of Waterloo (http://www.uwaterloo.ca/). This led me to the writings of Charles S. Peirce, the inventor of (amongst other things) pragmatism. Who is Peirce? The quote at the top of the page following the link below states: "Who is the most original and the most versatile intellect that the Americas have so far produced? The answer "Charles S. Peirce" is uncontested, because any second would be so far behind as not to be worth nominating." Now that's high praise, no? Check it out.

  • The term "pragmatism" signals both a philosophical doctrine about meaning and truth and a philosophical movement which started in America in the 19th century. Peirce invented pragmatism, but it took on a life of its own. Pragmatism is still going strong today. Plenty of information on pragmatism and the pragmatists is found at this site:
