WRITING A
POEM
Earlier draft appeared in ByLine,
224, July/August 1999.
I am not a hunter
I am a finder keeper
looking for a poem
I see one but it goes by
I find another in the clear air
then you whisper a line in my ear
I put all of this betwixt the leaves of my album
the rest is simply hard work
when I look back
sometimes I find a diamond
mostly only ashes
TWO
HAIKU FOR MILES DAVIS
The first of these two appeared in
Potpourri,
Vol. 12:2, 2000
Falling asleep
the sound of muted trumpet
weaves in my dreams
Blue in green sky and sea
hazy stars on satin sheets
let's rest together
The calligraphy, by the Zen Master Sengai,
reads:
"The spring color all over the fields"
